Basic information on the “Prismatic Textured Sand” technique on glass.

Add Prismatic Textured Sand to your enamels and Layering Mix to create a Textured background that you can paint on top of with:

  • Color Concentrates
  • Color Strokes are a opaque underglaze made for our ceramic side of the business but can be used for this technique as described in the free video.
  • De-Zigners or Enamels
  • The sand will add a sparkle to your glass work.
  • It is recommended that you sift clear powdered frit over your finished project and then add different size frit to create depth to your pieces.
  • Not recommended for food surfaces.
  • Refer to specific techniques and pattern packets.   Hydrangea Project found here.
  • If you want a smooth look and no texture you can sift 2 coats of powdered frit over your design and full fuse.  Sometimes a 2nd coat of powdered clear frit and another fuse may be required if still rough.
  • If you full fuse and have a smooth surface you have a food safe surface.
  • All sizes of frit/glass can be used for different effects.  See below.
  • Vent your kiln to 1100 degrees when using this base for decorating.
  • Pieces can be pre-fused and then do your pour background if desired.

The formula is 4 teaspoons of G302 Glacier White (or any color of your choice), 6 teaspoons of Layering Mix and 3 teaspoons of Prismatic Textured Sand.  This will create a liquid that you then pour on your glass (Opal White is recommended) and move it around to get a even coat on the glass.  Allow to dry 24 hours before working on the surface.

Suggested firing schedule below:

400/1100/15 (Vent to 1100 for the binders of the Layering Mix to burn off)
1100/1250/30
500/1345/15 (This may vary based on how your kiln fires and how much texture you want with the size frit you use)
9999/950 or 900/60
100/700/1

Every kiln is different and the desired effect is your choice.
